5 Things To Consider When Buying Your First Guitar

STYLE
There are three types you can choose from:

1.    Nylon string (Classical) :
       - Good for classical, jazz, flamenco, and spanish music
       - Ideal for children - strings are soft and light
       - Mellow and flowy sound

2.    Steel string (Acoustic) :
       - Good for folk, rock, and country music
       - Hard on the fingers
       - Bright and crisp sound

3.    Electric :
       - Good for rock, metal, and pop music
       - Hard on the fingers - thinner strings than on an acoustic guitar
       - Punchy and crunchy sound

SIZE/WEIGHT

Electric guitars are smaller in size than acoustic or classical. In weight however, they are heavier depending on whether it is a hollow type model or not. Acoustic guitars are lightweight, but bulky. If the player is 15 years or older, picking a full size guitar is ideal. For electric and classical guitars, any players 12 years or older can play with a full size also.

ACTION
String action is the measurement of the gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the fret. The higher the action, the harder it is to play for beginners and to get clear notes.
    Recommended action (for beginners):
●    Nylon String Guitars 2-2.3mm
●    Acoustic Guitars 2-2.7mm
●    Electric Guitars 3-3.6mm

SETUP
Make sure to buy a tuner and a gig bag along with the guitar. A hard case is optional, but isn’t necessary to purchase unless the guitar is expensive. It is also recommended to look at the tuner head and check if they are die-cast machine heads. They are more accurate while tuning and keep in tune better than covered machine heads.

BRAND
Choosing a sound from the start is not easy as most beginners will find their sound while learning usually after a year or so. Although investing in a good quality instrument is important, paying more does not mean your practicing will be any easier or sound any better. The player must be comfortable with their instrument more than anything else.
Recommended brands (beginners):
●    Nylon String Guitars:
      - Yamaha $ - $$
      - Cordoba $ - $$$
●    Acoustic Guitar:
      - Mitchell $ - $$
      - Yamaha $ - $$
      - Fender $ - $$$
      - Ibanez $ - $$$
●    Electric Guitars:
      - Fender $ - $$$
      - Ibanez $ - $$$
      - Epiphone $ - $$$
