About teacher

Cellist Jackie Hyun was born into a musical family in Seoul, Korea. She began playing the piano at age five and the cello at age nine. Before coming to New York to further her cello studies, Ms. Hyun won the first prizes for both I-Wha and Ye-Won competitions back to back in Seoul. She went on to study at the Juilliard School’s Pre-College and holds a bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School and Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. At the graduation, Ms. Hyun received an award for outstanding achievement in chamber music given to only one student per year voted by the faculty members. After graduation, Ms. Hyun was invited to become an associate principal cellist with the Korean Symphony Orchestra in Seoul for a few years before returning to New York to become a faculty member of the Long Island University Pre-College Division and the Suzuki Music Program with the Queens boro Community College. Currently, Ms. Hyun is a founding member and the cellist with the Arices Piano Trio, a principal cellist with Atempo Chamber Orchestra in New Jersey, cellist with the North Shore Symphony Orchestra and the executive director of the Korean American Youth Foundation of New York. Also Ms. Hyun is an organist and an associate music director of the Metropolitan United Methodist Church Chamber Music Series in Manhattan.
